ADELINE'S OWL

  •   I had a very dear friend named Adeline. She loved life and lived it to the fullest. We had many wonderful times together. She loved to get dressed up and go out to eat, she loved to ogle men and she loved her white Zinfandel. She could play the piano like nobody's business. She started failing in the last couple of years but I did my best not to let it stop her, we stayed closer to home and I didn't mention when she repeated herself. On Labor Day 2007 we were going out to lunch, and after calling several times I couldn't reach her. I got very concerned so I drove over to her house. I rang the bell several times and could hear her inside calling for help. I had to call 911 and they had to break into her house. She had fallen in the living room and had been there overnight. She didn't break anything but after a few days in the hospital she went into a nursing home. She never returned home and all her beautiful antiques were sold. I didn't know about the sale until I drove by her house & saw the sign. I pulled off the road and broke down. The next day I stopped and bought back a few things I had given her over the years - I treasure them. One day after that I went to visit her and she gave me two little figurines she had asked to be saved for me. I remember wondering why she had chosen these particular ones but it made her happy so I smiled and thanked her. Adeline passed away peacefully on March 8th 2008. She was 90. She had always hated having her picture taken but I managed to have two photos of her. I have them on a shelf and they are surrounded by some of the treasures I bought back and one of the little figurines. One day about 6 months ago when I was dusting I picked it up and froze. You see that little figurine is none other than an Owl ! So I stood there with tears streaming down my face staring at this little owl in amazement. Adeline always said we had a special connection and she was right. I had wondered many times why she choose an owl for me. Now I know. Because somehow she knew back then that I would find my way to these to these beautiful creatures. Somehow she just knew.
